Fidji 29 Italie 18 TOP_POP

Ligairi - Caucaunibuca, Ratuvou, Rabeni, Luveitasau - (o) Bai, (m) Rauluni - Talei, Doviverata, Rawaqa - Domolailai, Raiwalui (cap.) - Nagi, Koto, Bale. Remplaçants: Lotawa, Samo, Salabogi, Qera, Vucago, Tora, Kunavore

Mirco Bergamasco capitaine

Bortolussi - Canavosio, Mi. Bergamasco (cap.), Masi, Sepe - (o) Pez, (m) Griffen - Ma. Bergamasco, Sole, Parisse - Del Fava, Dellapé - Nieto, Ongaro, Lo Cicero. Remplaçants: Ghiraldini, Aguero, Staibano, Bortolami, Barbieri, Picone, Peens

MARCATORI FIJI: p.t. mete Ligairi, Caucau, Rauluni, Salabogi, 3 tr. e 1 cp. Bai
MARCATORI ITALIA: p.t. meta Sole, 1 cp. Pez; s.t. meta Lo Cicero, 1 tr. e 1 cp. Pez

Flying Fijians defeat Italy
By fijivillage
Jun 17, 2006, 17:46

The FMF Flying Fijians managed to hold on to a 29 - 18 win over a much favored Italy side this afternoon.

Fiji made a good start after Norman Ligairi sliced through the Azzurie defense to score the first try of the match only six minutes in the match.
And then the 10,000 capacity crowd at Churchill Park in Lautoka was sent into a frenzy when Bua flyer Rupeni Caucau dashed to the try line to score the second in the 28th minute.
Caucau then set up another, this time for his skipper Jacob Rauluni before a brilliant solo effort by Kini Salabogi sealed Fiji's points in the first half. However, the Italian forwards completely out muscled our forwards with three tries in the match.

Italy fall to Fiji in Lautoka
Saturday June 17 2006
Caucau and company leave Azzurri standing

Italy were handed a lesson in island rugby on Saturday, going down 29-18 to Fiji in Lautoka.

The result of the tour match punctuates the Azzurri's season and ensures that the Fijians go into the next round of the Pacific Five Nations with their heads high.
Amid shaky hands and a number of missed opportunities, tries from Norman Ligairi, Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Isoa Domolailai and Kini Salabogi gave the locals an unassailable lead of 29-8 at the break.
The tourists got Andrea Lo Cicero over the line in the first half and mounted a belated response via a second-half from Josh Sole, but it was too little too late.
The result at Churchill Park means that Fiji go 4-3 up in the overall 'series' between the two countries. Italy took the honours when the sides last met - in the snows of Monza in November.

Fiji holds on to win against Italy

Super wing Rupeni Caucau scored one of Fiji’s four tries to guide the FMF Flying Fijians to a gallant 29-18 win over Italy at Churchill Park yesterday. The win was sweet revenge for last year’s loss. However the national side had to dig deep to win the match after Italy came storming back into the match.
The Simon Raiwalui-led side defended like demons in the second half to deny Italy victory. National coach Wayne Pivac was over the moon with his first win of the season and he took his hat off after his troops put up a sterling display in the second half to hold off a fired up Italian side.
Pivac said injuries to Ifereimi Rawaqa and Jo Bale in the first half put a lot of pressure on the forwards. He said the side would celebrate their first win after they avenged their loss to the Azzuri last November.
“We got away with a win so we have to be happy with that after last week so it’s a big improvement,” Pivac said. “We will celebrate this one tonight because it has been two hard weeks for us and we will worry about Samoa on Monday.”
The national side failed to put points on the broad after the restart as the tourists scored 10 unanswered points. “We defended pretty well, they dug really deep in the second half with injuries and one player out in the sin bin and we are to take a lot out of the game and now look forward to Samoa next week we just got to do a head count on our injuries,” Pivac said.
Italy coach Pierre Berbizier was disappointed his side could not turn possession into points in the second half. Berbizier said that turnovers had proved costly and the Fijians punished them in the first half to win the match.
He added that the side would now have a break before they prepare for their Test matches in November.
“Fiji played an exciting game,” Berbizier said.
“We lost balls and when you play a team like Fiji it can punish you. We gave balls on the Fiji line with this its impossible to play.”

Caucau serves a special

Rupeni Caucau

BUA flyer Rupeni Caucau scored a magnificent try to help Fiji grind a 29-18 win over Italy in a one off Test in Lautoka yesterday.
The France-based player delighted the 8000 fans when he scooped a pass from Norman Ligairi out wide and ran in 30 metres to score his second try in as many matches for the national side this season.
While Caucau's sublime effort was one of the best moments of the first half, Fiji failed to spark in the second spell.
Fiji scored three tries in the first half but it came at a price. The national side lost two key players with Ifereimi Rawaqa and Joe Bale to injury.
The national side was kept scoreless as the Italians tightened up its defence.
Fiji coach Wayne Pivac said the players controlled the first spell.
"In the heat we could see that they (Italy) were tiring," Pivac said.
"When we switched play they were not able to recover. But then we had some unfortunate injuries. Rawaqa was out and this upset our line out. Then we lost Joe one of our better scrumaggers. This put us under a lot of pressure. In the second half it was a real battle in term of getting field possession. So it was really about hanging tough."
The Italians took the lead when Ramiro Pez nailed a penalty in the 2nd minute.
Fiji scored the opening try in the 5th minute. Caucau took the ball in field but was tackled. Jacob Rauluni spun the ball wide with full back with Ligairi joining the line. Ligairi blitz the Italy defence to touch down in the corner. Seremaia Bai converted from the sideline to give Fiji the lead.
Bai succeeded with a penalty to put Fiji into double figures.
Fiji went further ahead when Caucau scored after back line move, which featured Ligairi.
Caucau was involved in the set up of the third try scored by Rauluni in the 38th minute.
From the ensuring kick off Stallions forward Kini Salabogi displayed his strengthen gathering the ball and breaking through the Italy defence. He chipped over the last line of defence and scored.
In injury time Italy sneaked in a try with a forward move.
With a handy 29-8lead at halftime the fans had expected a white wash.
But the Italians had other ideas holding all the possession. The Italians dominated the forwards. Fiji lost its lineouts occasionally.
Italy scored is second try after a five-metre scrum. Prop Andrea Lo Cicero forced his way over.
Caucau was sent to the sin bin for a late charge.
Pez succeeded with his second penalty to close the gap 29-18.
Pivac said the injuries to the key players in the first half unsettled the team.
"We will have to look at our line outs options without Rawaqa," Pivac said.
"The boys didn't react under pressure, as we would have liked. But we got away with a win and we should be happy with that. It's a big improvement from last week."
Fiji plays Samoa in the Pacific Cup next Saturday.
