Effective communication for 80 minutes is the key for the FMF Flying Fijians to see off traditional rival Manu Samoa in today’s test. National coach Wayne Pivac said poor communication in the field was a contributing factor in Fiji’s recent average outings.
“We want to improve on all areas but to suit the game plan against Samoa the boys have to communicate well so that we don’t gift easy penalties and to enable us get more ball possession to attack.’’
He said only improved communication would help avoid a repeat of the poor second half display against Italy last week where the side failed to add to its first half tally and made to defend continuously for long periods.
“The backline is very strong but of no use if key players are starved of ball possession.’’
Fiji’s best assault weapon Rupeni Caucau with two tries in as many games on home soil is in top shape but Pivac said it was important for the team to create space for the France based wing with exceptional qualities.
“Rupeni is a class without doubt, I’m impressed with his contribution both in attack and defence in the games he has played, he has proved effective with ball in hands but he needs to be given that space to operate.’’
Pivac said stepping into the final stages of the inaugural iRB Pacific Cup series a remarkable improvement was noted in the player’s attitude towards performing like a team.
“Compared to the game against Tonga I think we’ve improved.’’
Pivac said as expected after the loss against Tonga in Gosford players have improved and were responding better to the calls and combination practiced during training.
Pivac has high hopes on the return from injury of rated open side flanker Aca Ratuva to help the side secure clean balls from set pieces.
“Aca is our number one choice in the tackle ball area and his return should help us in that area.’’
“Leaving Akapusi Qera out of the team was a tough decision,’’ Pivac said.
“Certainly it is not the end of Qera, I know he has been scoring a lot of tries lately but apart from scoring tries we need a number seven to do well in the tackle ball area.’’
“Qera is young, still learning and he will get his chance to play.’’
Pivac said he was not happy with the Nadroga utility back rower’s accuracy in the tackle ball area in the games he played.
“In selecting cover on the bench I’ve opted for experience and Doviverata’s ability to play anywhere in the back row is the reason him being chosen ahead of Qera.’’

Victoire des Fidjis 23 à 20 avec 2 essais du futur briviste Ligairi. Les Fidjiens ont joué une bonne partie du match à 14 avec l'expulsion de leur ailier droit Mosese Luveitasau.

C'est donc la première fois que Caucau jouait un match avec les Fidji sans marquer d'essai.
Et donc apparemment, son vis-à-vis s'est fait expulsé.

Fiji put up a much improved performance to shrug off a strong Samoa challenge and registered their first Pacific Five Nations win with a 23-20 victory at the Post Fiji Stadium this afternoon.
Playing with 14 men, the Fijians were a different unit from that of the early rounds of the IRB competition, playing a solid defensive game throughout the fiercely contested game.
A double to star fullback Norman Ligairi in the first half and two conversions, three penalties to first five Seremaia Bai was enough to seal the win for the hosts at a windy Laucala oval.
Fiji was handicapped early in the first spell when winger Mosese Luveitasau was red carded for employing a spear head tackle on Samoan centre Seilala Mapasua.
The game was physical, as local rugby pundits predicted, featuring a number of big hits with the scavenging Fijian defence holding the bigger and robust Samoans with solid defence.
Waikato utility back Lockie Crichton was at the end of some hard hitting Fijian defence when he was floored time and again with hits from Fijian centre Seru Rabeni.
Star winger Rupeni Caucau was a threat to the Samoans whenever he got the ball but could not score a try as he was heavily marked throughout the encounter.
Flying Fijians coach Wayne Pivac heaved praises at his team for their defensive work saying his team showed a lot of character to beat the Samoans despite being down to 14 men for 60 minutes of the game.
Samoa coach Michael Jones said the Fijian defence unsettled their plans adding his team will have to regroup fast to start preparing against Tonga next weekend.
Fiji faces Japan next weekend.

Le principal est qu'il ne s'est pas blessé et qu'il ne s'est pas fait expulsé dans ce match hyper physique

Luveitasau sent off for dangerous tackle

Fiji punctuated their Pacific Five Nations campaign with a tense 23-20 victory over Samoa in Suva on Saturday.
The Fijians showed great character in the face of adversity to play more than 50 minutes of the match with 14 men after Mosese Luveitasau was dismissed by referee Wayne Barnes for a spear-tackle after just 27 minutes.
Samoa, full of confidence after a good win against Japan, started the game well and dominated the early exchanges as the visitors' pack subjected Fiji's eight to severe pressure both at the set-piece and the breakdown. A concerted period of pressure on the Fiji line eventually led to Danile Farani crossing for the game's opening try.
However, just as it appeared that the Samoans would pile on the points, Fiji came right back into the match with Norman Ligairi weaving his way to the line for a sensational individual try after Rupeni Caucaunibuca's break. Seremia Bai's penalty in the 21st minute stretched the home side's lead to 10-5.
However, Luveitasau's sending off left Fiji facing a rather difficult task, but the home side showed immense character not only to withstand immense pressure from the Samoans, but also to rally and produce the next score of the game as Norman Ligari bagged his brace.
Fiji held a 17-5 lead at the interval, but Samoa, playing with the wind behind the, increased the pressure in the second half and soon took advantage of the extra man. Loki Crichton struck his first penalty goal of the afternoon to reduce the deficit and six minutes later converted Eliota Fuimaono Sapolu's try to reduce Fiji's lead to just two points.
However, just as it appeared that the Fijians would capitulate, a string of Samoan errors and some committed Fiji defence, allowed the home side to come back into the game. Three consecutive Bai penalties eased the home side's nerves and despite Semo Setiti's late score, Fiji hung on for a memorable victory.
