Historic first African Leopards squad

From 12 countries

The first South African Leopards team has been chosen and it comes from 12 countries. They will be making history as it will be the first such team to come out of Africa.

They play the South African Students team at Ellis Park on 23 July as a curtainraiser to the second Mandela Plate match between Australia and South Africa.

The team is organised by the Confederation of African Rugby whose secretary, Paul Sigombe, will be the manager of the side. The coaches are Deon Davids, the assistant coach to the Boland Cavaliers, and Alain Hyardet, formerly the coach of Montferrand.

Botswana, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia all have at least one player selected to represent the Leopards. There are no players from Zimbabwe and Côte d'Ivoire as those two teams play each other in a World Cup qualifier on that day.

CAR president, Abdelaziz Bougja, said: “This is an important step forward as Africa is one of the most exciting areas of growth for rugby and every African player will aspire to becoming a Leopard,

"This Pan-African team will capture the imagination of the rugby world and it is envisaged that the African Leopards will play regularly throughout Africa and worldwide.”

IRB Chairman Syd Millar said: “This is a very exciting initiative as it will provide Africa's top players with an added incentive to develop their skills and the opportunity to play rugby at the highest level. The African Leopards will also play an important role in promoting African rugby.”
