French Universities win again

Victory in Dunkirk

French Universities, for the second time this year, beat England Students when the teams met at Stade Tribut in Dunkirk on Friday evening, but the defat (17-3) was evidence of an improvement for the England side.
In February French Universities played England Students at Twickenham. the French students won 41-6.

The rain came down and it was cold. The England pack stood up to the French better than they had done at Twickenham, perhaps both factors in the improved England performance.
Away from the forwards, France was too good.
French flyhalf Robin Janisson dummied his way over after England had lost a defensive line-out only three minutes into the game. Fullback James Lennard kicked a penalty goal to reduce the lead to 5-3, the score at half-time.
In the second half French centre Shawn Hegarty added a second try after England spilled the ball going forward and wing Aurélien Sourouille added a third with half-an-hour remaining and added the conversion himself.
England did the attacking in the last quarter of an hour of the match but could not get a try.
Five players won their first caps for England at this level. Hartpury's Mark George started in the back-row and Bristol flanker James Lumby, Hartpury lock Steve Papé, and Loughborough backs Toby Henry and Greg Collett all appeared as replacements.
