Report
France secured their semi-final place in the Under 21 World Championship with a hardfought 37-27 victory over England at Mendoza Rugby Club.
France fly half Lionel Beauxis scored 21 of his team's points against an Egland side that struggled in vain to match their opponents.
From the start, England kept the ball in their forwards whilst France looked to bring their backs into the game. Maxime Medard opened the try scoring in the first half, benefitting from Beaxis' vision and quick hands. England responded with a fine try of their own, full back Olly Morgan latching on to a clever kick from fly half Toby Flood to bring the score to 11-10 in favour of France.
But France extended their lead once again with a Beauxis penalty and a Sylvain Mirande try to leave the half time score at 21-10.
Two England tries early in the second half, to Mark Hopley and Flood brought them to within two points of the French, but the team in blue recovered their poise and their control of the game. Damien Fevre's try late in the second half was the final nail in England's coffin.
Quotes
Jim Mallinder (coach England): It was a very hard game and we are disappointed with the result. But France deserved their victory, which was gained around the fine performance of their fly half. Now we have to correct our errors for the next matches.
Eric Lamarque (coach France): We played with a lot of intensity. We suffered a lot of injuries, but we're happy to be in the semi finals. We're also happy because our defence was criticised against Italy and I said that it was rather a problem of ball retention. We showed that that was the case today.
