Caucau sends apology letter
(Thursday, August 25, 2005)
RUPENI Caucaunibuca is understood to have written an apology letter to the Fiji Rugby Union for having not joined the national team in its matches earlier this year.
And the FRU has also decided to include a local to travel with the Fiji team for the end of the year tour to the Northern Hemisphere as the backline coach.
Caucau as he is commonly known had failed to join the FMF Flying Fijians team on three occasions despite being named by national coach Wayne Pivac.
First he took off to his village instead of joining the camp ahead of the Maori match in June citing family commitments for his actions. He was later dropped for the All Blacks test before being given a chance to join the team ahead of the Samoa match last month, where he left the team at the airport saying his wife was sick.
FRU chief executive Ratu Timoci Tuivanuavou had written to the Bua speedster to explain his actions after which Caucau was given 21 days to reply for his actions.
A FRU source who didn't want to be named claims Caucau had written back to them and apologised for his actions and explained why he had abandoned the team.
Tavanavanua confirmed they had received a reply from Caucau but wouldn't divulge what the wing said.
"We have got a response from Caucau and back to him before we release it publicly," Tavanavanua said.
If the claims were true that Caucau had asked for an apology, it would not be the first time. He had asked for a second chance before deserting the team prior to its Samoa trip.
The board meeting which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday didn't eventuate because of a lack of quorum. Four board members who were absent from the meeting have been given a chance to study the case and give their views on the matter before a final outcome is agreed upon.
