RUPENI Caucau returned to the rugby paddock yesterday with the aim of winning back a place in the national side.

After four months on the sideline, the 27-year-old scored a try to help Tailevu beat a plucky Navosa side 32-25 in a Digicel Cup match yesterday.

But it was Tailevu fullback Iliesa Keresoni's two tries that gave the Farebrother Trophy holders victory at the death.

Caucau's comeback attracted a big crowd at Ratu Cakobau Park but he failed to live up to his tag as a world-class player.

Happy with his first game since leaving French club Agen in February, the try-scoring machine admitted he lacked his usual pace.

"The boys played well. As for me, it's been four months since I played again and I found some difficulties," he said. "I think I lacked match fitness but I'm working on that. I'm happy to have scored a try for the team I started my career with 10 years ago."

He said he was determined to get back into the national side in sevens and fifteens.

"That's what I'm trying to do but I can't promise anything. First, I need to play more matches and see where I go from there."

Caucau is expected to join French club Metro Racing next month and wants to play for Tailevu in the defence of the Farebrother trophy against Namosi.

Also present to watch the match was Sireli Bobo, who will play alongside Caucau for Metro Racing.

Playing on the right wing, Caucau was a marked man and attracted the Navosa defence.

This allowed centre Saula Radidi to go in for the first try.

Minutes later, Navosa scored an intercept try to winger Naovasi to level the scores 7-all.

Tailevu extended its lead to 17-7 with a try to captain Jone Kaila and penalty to James Vuli.

Navosa replied with two tries to flyhalf Eparama Rokoyawa and prop Necani Baivatu to lead 19-17 at the breather.

A 50-metre penalty from the left boot of fullback Jaoji Dakuvula extended Navosa's lead before an unmarked Caucau strolled over for his try to tie the match at 22-all.

Dakuvula kept Navosa in the lead with another big kick before Taranaki-bound Keresoni sliced through the Navosa defence to score two tries, both within the space of five minutes, to win the closely contested encounter.

tes bien gentil mais si tu nous le mettais en francais !!!?

Ben si j'ai bien compris il a rejoué avec une équipe de part chez lui.
Il a d'ailleurs marqué un essaie (Bobo assité au match).
Il est bien content même si il sait que physiquement il est encore un peu juste mais il y travaille et espère rejoindre le MR dans un mois.
Et espère aussi pouvoir rejouer avec son équipe national à 7 ou à 15!
Mais bon apparement physiquement c'est pas ça encore!!!!!

Ayant vu le calendrier de PRO D2, et que nous jouons contre le RACING 92, pour l'ultime journée, souhaitons que CAUCAU ne soit pas notre bourreau,et qu'il nous prive de quelque chose !!!!!

Je le crain d'avantage que le AGEN/AUCH en ouverture, qui a mon avis sera téléviser a coup sur.
